Chimps throw things...adult humans do not. Isn't he a journalist? Is he unaware of the power of the pen? Should a journalist who is unaware of the power of the pen have a job as a journalist? What would've happened to him had he thrown a shoe at Saddam I wonder?
  • Retired LE · 1 year ago
Had he thrown it at Hussein, he would have had his feet amputated - if he lived that long. Your analogy of a chimp is spot on. The guy is a fricking idiot.
  • George · 1 year ago
Muntadhar al-Zaidi is obviously very directionless in life as was demonstarted by his shoe throwing incident .... he could not even hit a target 5 yards away which makes him an ideal suicide bomber ..... My advise is for him is to put on his vest and he has a guaranteed "hit" or even better, become a suicide bomber instructor. I can just hear his last words....."Class, please pay attention, I can only demonstrate this once" !
  • Litz · 1 year ago
Not only shoes, shit should also be thrown on each and every american who supported killing of 200,000 Iraqis through war. Atleast Saddam killed some 25,000 Iraqis between 1978 and 2003, whereas Amercans have killed/butchers/raped 200,000 within a span of 4 years. Keep it up! Your economy will screw you and will be out of world domination. Amen!
  • George · 1 year ago
Not sure where you get your information from but you are obviously ill informed ....do you know where Iraq is ?
  • P K · 1 year ago
    George, Is it still there?
  • George · 1 year ago
:) Osama's buddies which are the "friends" of Iraq according to some are blowing it to pieces so might not be there much longer.
  • Marie · 1 year ago
Muntadhar al-Zaidi was acting out on behalf of the rage, sadness and pain caused to all Iraqis who have lost loved ones through the American occupation of Iraq. Bush's reaction was hypocrytical as a stateman very well knows the implication when shoes are thrown in the manner in the Arab world. He laughed it off as a joke, margenlizing and undermining its purpose.

Let the world and Iraq truly taste democracy in action!! Let him be a poster boy for the 1st taste of DEMOCRACY in action. Free the young man with a simple fine as he is a journalist and expressed his right to freedom of speech! He does not hate Americans, he loathes its leader and with good reason too. His political statement is felt by the entire world only he was brave enough to do what no one would dare....call a dog by its name.

    thanks
  • George · 1 year ago
The only thing I agree with Marie is call the dog by its name ..... Muntadhar al-Zaidi I take it. I am proud father of a US Marine and proud of the excellent work the US forces are doing in Iraq and for that matter anywhere in the world. They (US Forces) demonstrate backbone, wisdom and patriotism which is see is lacking in a lot of these articles. Thanks to the military who protects our Democracy !!!
  • Retired LE · 1 year ago
I don't care if he was reacting because of an ingrown toenail. You do not disrespect a head of state in that manner. If I was standing next to him when he did it, he would have lost some teeth.
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
It is good to perform the show-throwing act to a living Jamrah from US, because the Muslims are still in the Hajj month where throwing stones to Jamrah ( stone idols) is a part of the Hajj pillars.
  • George · 1 year ago
Well this idiot is seriously out of practice .... or was thrown out becuase he can not hit an elephant 1 yard away or needs glasses
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
It seems that the Iraqi people suffer more now than they were during Saddam Hussein. Only Saddam Hussein knew how to rule such a country with his kind of blend. Bush doesn't know that what good to US may not be good to other countries.
  • George · 1 year ago
That is the problem with you guys .... no blame to Osama and his criminal followers who will go straight to hell in any case .... I thought they are the suicide bombers killing innicent people .... duh ! Do not forget who started this cowardly acts and now continue with their Satanistic acts against the US forces and the Iraqi people .... Osama and his buddies who do not contribute to any thing in life apart from causing misery to their own people....absolutely clueless...just like L.E.T.
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
Don't you consider US acts killing inoccent people in Iraq and Afghanistan equally Satanic? How do you define a Satan? An anti-Christ ? Or an anti-Semitic (Jews) ?
  • Harry · 1 year ago
Throwing shoes to President Bush must be condemned. Where is his respect to his President's guests? He, the Iraqi Journalist, must be punished and put in jail - no question. I don't believe most Iraqis or Arabs or Muslims support this journalist. This act is totally unacceptable. President Bush is head of state, US chief representative in the world. Imagine, what would you do if your Emir, King is humiliated by a foreigner? You will not accept it, won't you?
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
I will accept and understand your manner if the Emir or King had ever invaded your country, killed your parents, families, relatives, friends, etc. I bet if you are in his position, you will reacting in similar manner or worst after years of mental and physical sufferings seeing the demolished country. Who cares if his is the highness of a state? The most important thing is the end result that he has done to your people and your country!
  • Adam · 1 year ago
I'm guessing that you are not a Kurd are you Abuya? Or you do not care that much about the Kurds and what they have suffered through under Hussein.

The fact of the matter is that the VAST majority of civilian deaths in Iraq are on the heads of America's enemies. I believe they are the enemies of Iraq too. Or do you see them as Iraqi heroes...that hail from Iran? lol.

This shoe thrower is an man who figured out how to be the news instead of merely reporting it. I think fame was his game. He's got it. He'll be popular in some circles over where he works...and less popular in others. As a reporter/journalist...he has done his profession a grave mis-service.
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
Well, Kurds were the rebel group during Saddam's era, similarly other countries having their own dedicated rebel factions. But during the early 80's when Iraq and Iran at war betweem them, why did US backup Iraq if Saddam was really torturing his Kurds people?
You should noticed that Kurds are Sunni, similar sect with Saddam and he could manage to unite Sunni and Shiite during his time. Saddam never cares either a Sunni or Shiite, as long as if you don't follow the rules you'll be in deep trouble. But he did this to ensure the mass majority people of Iraq can live peacefully.
And now, can you ensure these two sects can live peacefully together as before during Saddam times? Every single day will never past without hearing bombing overthere.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
Abuya: You want to know the secret to living peacefully? Don't blow each other up! It's an amazing concept really. You choose to NOT strap a bomb to your sister's chest. You choose to NOT go from one conflict to another until you are dead...none of the "goals" of your various factions having ever materialized.

As to why we backed up Saddam? The other guy was WORSE! You have to choose to help one crazy dictator or the other...so hard to choose! And yes it is important to the USA to have peace and stability in the middle east.
  • Sargent Ellsworth · 1 year ago
The shoe throwing incident was a conspiracy masterminded by OJ Simpson because Bush refused his back door request for a pardon. The CIA knows this because their forensic tests revealed that the shoes were size 10 Bruno Maglie loafers.
  • Mike · 1 year ago
Respect is earned, not automatically given. Even if you are a head of state. Bush has completely lost any respect I had for him with his inane policies and all his bullshit talk about "liberating" the Iraqis. I thought we were there for those "Weapons of Mass Destruction?" Oh, that's right, the WMDs never existed.

This journalist has earned my respect for being brave enough to express his feelings to the President, clearly and concisely. He did what many of us would like to do. I especially would like to throw shoes at Bush because of the shitty state of our economy.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
Mike...you do automatically give respect to world leaders. Any thought otherwise is barbaric and low class. I hope that you never treat anyone in a position of authority in such a poor fashion. The journalist however has earned nothing. He is not gaining attention for excellence in journalism...but for his ability to throw objects.
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
Then, what gratitude do you expect this guy to give Bush? A bouquet of flowers? After he had ruining the country, worst than Saddam Hussein, Bush deserved to get hit by the shoes from the Iraqi people.
  • hannah · 1 year ago
After reading the comments here, there are some who say that you do not show disrespect for a leader. And who would that be? Was bush a leader? He has never been a leader. The Iraq war was planned long before he stole office and it was the people behind the scenes that were running this show. But we all know that. bush has run at least three countries into the ground, Iraq, the US and Afghanistan and the world is in turmoil due to bush economic policy. Millions have suffered because of this man. I am sorry that one of those shoes didn't hit him. He is a disgraceful, despicable person.

Abuya: I expect him to be a reporter and report the news. If that is too difficult for him to do while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor...then he should be fired. In the adult world...emotional temper tantrums are not tolerated. It is also criminal. Criminal behavior is also not tolerated in the adult world. Not to mention it's uneducated behavior. It is not like the journalist did not have a means of expression. He's a journalist/reporter for goodness sake! He knew what he was doing...he planned it. He was looking to get famous.
  • Jennifer · 1 year ago
I think this man is a disgrace. He is a journalist and should be therefore writing....not throwing. He looks like an overgrown child throwing a fit. I would expect better behavior from my 6 year old. It shows a lack of respect for a leader of another country. Hannah and others feel that it is ok to disrespect leaders. I was raised differently. When a leader, elder, or another in power is present, even if you don't believe in or support everything they do, you show respect. You do not by any means throw shoes at them. What if one had hit our president? They could have injured him and should be treated as such, a weapon. President Bush has done the best he could during hard times and should not be held responsible for everything bad that has happened to our country. there are many, many to blame. Get over yourself, Hannah...Bush scapegoat is leaving office soon and we'll see how Obama does in such a tough state.
  • Retired LE · 1 year ago
    Jennifer,

Nice to see another voice of reason here. You may not like the man, but you respect the office. We are supposed to be civilized. Oh wait, the shoe thrower and his kind like to strap explosives to themselves and kill innocent women and children... on purpose....
  • IndyQuilter · 1 year ago
I feel strongly about this incident....just the fact that Bush knew so little about the culture...that he didn't get it at all....to me shows he deserved it. Our men have died...and Bush didn't get it. Iraqis flogged Sadam's statue with shoes...and Bush didn't get it. I was more appalled by Bush's verbal reaction than I was by the shoes being thrown. He (BUSH ) is pathetic.....
  • Adam · 1 year ago
If Bush acted like a huge outrageous act of violence happened...our secret service people might've felt compelled to beat the snot out of the man responsible. What exactly would a good reaction have been? Crying? Anger? Dancing? How about burning an Iraqi flag?
  • IndyQuilter · 1 year ago
    Adam,
I respect what you said. However, in that culture the "showing of the sole" of the shoe is the ultimate insult....Bush would have been better off saying...nothing. He had a cavalier..so, it was a size 10, so what..he threw a shoe.... the statement made by the journalist in actions and words were --you are less than the dirt under my shoes--you are a "dog"....but what made me shiver was that for all the blood shed over there.....Bush knew nothing of their culture..he did not get the message. I am a 68 year old quilter, housewife....not a Harvard grad....and I know this. What Bush said was more offensive to the Iraqi people than being pelted with shoes. Don't worry the Iraqi police have already beaten him. Doesn't it mean anything...look at the demonstrations...these people want us gone...THEY DID NOT INVITE US IN....and we are responsible for killing many of them. The lucky ones now have 14 hours of electricity a day ! You don't have to guess....I was against the war....only because I could not believe the country I love so much was going to invade another country. What has Bush done for you lately?
  • anonymous · 1 year ago
although a bit unconventional, the man is not an idiot. I think he made the most forceful statement about not only how he feels but perhaps also many of the people who have to suffer through violence everyday in Iraq... i'd call him misguided :/

still it's extremely disrespectful to do that to any head of state
  • aaron · 1 year ago
i think all of those who are promoting the "you must respect the office of the head of state" position are not seeing the totality of what that means outside of this one incident. unless by "respect" you just mean not throwing shoes, then it's hard for me to understand how this "respect" means anything at all. remember when obama was laughed off the stage by mccain for suggesting that he would sit down with any world leaders without preconditions? wouldn't that seem disrespectful to not meet with them? there's a difference between respecting the head of state, but not necessarily the man. in this incident, i think the reporter was more disrespecting the man than he was the office of the presidency. i think most americans would agree that we have respect for the presidential office while at the same time giving bush a ridiculously low approval rating. throwing shoes may be a bit exaggerated of a response, but don't talk about respecting the office of the presidency. that wasn't what this was about in my estimation.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
Aaron: So it'd be cool for me to b1tchslap Chavez because I dislike the man...but it wouldn't be taken as an insult by his countrymen? Sure.

How about the next time Sardowski visits I throw a used condom at him? It's not France that I'm disrespecting just the man who dumped his wife for a model.

How about I draw a picture of Mohammed having sex with a goat? It's not the religion I'm disrespecting...it's just the man himself that I am offended by. All his promises for virgins...don't these virgins have Father's that get a say in who pops his daughter's cherry?
  • aaron · 1 year ago
    Adam,
it's convenient for you to ignore the fact that i said the shoe-throwing was an "exaggerated response" because then you can't invent some inane situations to try to prove your point. i mean, throwing a condom on sardowski (i think you mean sarkozy, btw)? seriously? that's a much more crude gesture than a shoe regardless of the cultural implications of shoe-throwing.

the point is, in this particular incident, based on the kind of journalism the man was engaged in that focused on the extreme poverty and mistreatment that has befallen many iraqi people because of bush's invasion, the man feels strongly about THAT MAN being the responsible party for the suffering that he is witnessing in his country. sure, he may hate the USA, but if you look at the things he shouted afterwards, they were not "down with america" but "this is a farewell kiss, you dog." that is what i'm referring to. what has chavez done to you or your family? has mohammed caused you any personal hardship? this is not to say that bush has personally done anything to this man's family but that his policies and reckless international weight-throwing have directly caused much of the suffering that this man deals with on a daily basis. try to see it through his eyes.
  • Abuya · 1 year ago
I strongly agree with you Aaron, given the chance if after January 2009 when Obama officially replaces Bush , if you put Obama and Bush side by side infront of Muntadhar al-Zaidi, he will certainly hurl his shoes towards Bush rather than Obama. Not because he is not respecting the US presidency, but he hates Bush personally as a man, not him as the president of US.
  • Cromwell · 1 year ago
'W' has done terrible things in the past but I don't think he deserves that kind of treatment.

we should have left saddam in place...... these people are worthless better to have a bunch of homeless people camp out on your front yard than to help the IDIOTS in IRAQ.... the sunnis are the minority YET they controlled the country..... IDIOT shiites and sunnis ITS YOUR OWN PEOPLE KILLING YOU>..... but they are toooo stupid to see it... blame the white guy that's the ticket, once we leave that country will fall apart, should NUKE it and the garbage country next to it and be done with the whole thing..... middle east = countries of worthless scum of the earth.... long live the queen!
  • rbas1 · 1 year ago
This journalist is just abusing his new found freedom for 15 minutes of fame. Where was his outrage when the Kurds and the Shiites were being gassed by Sadan or when the entire soccer team was executed by Sadam’s son, or Shiites and Sunis blowing up each other?…..What he needs to do is swallow his shoe out of embarrassment for such a dysfunctional culture that don’t seem to get their act together and keep blaming everyone except themselves for their shortcomings.
  • Salman · 1 year ago
Its about time that USA should realize they Americans are the most hated nation in the middle east and the oveall Muslim world due to their unilateral policies and hegemonius attitude. The US president deserved not only 2 but 200 shoes smacked on his face@@@
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous.

Adam - Voicing your opinion does nothing to influence Bush, Jr. He will just continue his way regardless. Don't you remember 'Mission Accomplished"? Reality is not Bush's strong suit. If it doesn't fit his way of thinking, he will ignore the facts.

George - He's a reporter. You say he's directionless in life? And should become a bomber? Your post shows both your ignorance on the subject and your inability to understand people and their motives. Put the blame where it lays. Osama for 9/11, Bush for Iraq. One had nothing to do with the other. The only piece of evidence linking the two was coerced, and more importantly fabricated and false testimony under duress and torture. There was no link. Bush, Jr. was hust looking for an excuse to invade Iraq and topple Saddam. Listen to his speeches in the years before the war.

Retired LE - Bush has shown no respect to the average Iraqi citizen. He even used their plight to improve his image. "Mission Accomplished." Why should they respect him? Should people have respected Hitler while he was fuhrer? Hell no. Actions such as invading Iraq and propping up governments leads to our insecurity.

Rbas - How exactly would the journalist have reported Saddam's atrocities without being tortured and executed? And when the fighting between groups was going on at one point he was kidnapped. I'd say he has first-hand knowledge of what is going on on the ground. He has as much a right to be upset as anyone.

Steven allah - I don't exactly disagree with you in terms of leaving Saddam in place. He and his sons may have been horrible, but he was the only secular leader of a Muslim country. The only time he used religion was pretty much to gain support against America when we invaded. It was absolutely necessary to go to Iraq when they invaded Kuwait, but the second time was not necessary. He was able to keep a stable Middle East because of his military and the geographic location of Iraq. Deposing him could only lead to instability in the region. How Bush and those around him didn't see this is beyond me. The second part I disagree with whole-heartedly. It doesn't even deserve a retort.

It amazes me how we as Americans refuse to look at ourselves and admit failures and responsibility. We aren't responsible for every problem in the Middle East, but one cannot say we aren't a large contributor. Start accepting responsibility and stop pointing the finger. We are Americans and we should be better than that.
  • Retired LE · 1 year ago
    Matt,

Comparing Bush to Hitler is totally out of line.... Bush made his decision to invade Iraq based on intel he was provided by his advisors and our allies. Everyone seems to forget how Saddam played the game, or what he did to his own people.

The only sad thing here is that we have essentially traded blood for oil. Without that oil the ragheads would still be nomads - living in tents and scratching fleas.

Remember that your website can be promoted using social tools like hi5 or twitter. I happen to have a website with cheap designer clothing and I could use the benefits of getting in touch with my potential clients of course using Hi5, Twitter, Facebook etc. I guess traditional Marketing didn't foresaw the immense benefits of web 2.0 hehe
